Old Friends

This past weekend was nice. I was finally able to go back home for the weekend. While I was in town, I received a text message from an old friend that had wanted to hang out at a friend's party. I hadn't seen him in a couple months, so I figured why not? We had been really close friends since middle school. We had basically grown up together.

Throughout the years, we had helped each other through the tough high school years then what was also thrown at us in college. We were always able to talk about everything with each other, from family, school to relationship problems. Coming from a small town, our parents know each other and always ask about the other one because they know how good of friends we are. We hadn't really been on very good terms lately, so I wondered how he was going to act or even talk around me. From the past year we had our share of troubles from being frustrated with the distance and both being so busy with work and school. We hardly had time for each other to even just talk.

After a couple of games at the party, we were finally able to go outside and talk. Well we had a long heart to heart talk about everything. We both dished out our frustrations about not being able to talk to one another when we needed each other. We both confessed about how we wanted to be better friends towards each other. There were many times that we were close to crying, but there were some nice distractions that made us laugh like a friend popping in their head every now and then to ask if we were dating, which made us both laugh. Probably the best part was when we brought up old times.

In middle school, we both hung out with the same people so being the stud that he is (he played every sport well and was the quarterback from middle school all the way to high school) one of my close friends had a crush on him. Now back in middle school we didn't have too many electives to choose from, and the typical was to take art, but my friend Kristal had heard that our guy friend was taking wood shop for his elective. Kristal was a very persistent person and a good friend to me (she was the first friend I made on my first day of public school, but that's another story). She came up to me one morning before school and begged me to take the wood shop class with her so she could at least talk to our guy friend. Being the good friend that I was, I agreed to take wood shop with her and figured it wouldn't be too bad even though we would be the only two girls in the class. The class turned out to be pretty fun and we all had a blast. We were even able to develop photos the old fashioned way, in black and white. I even still have a photo I developed from that class.

Well I had brought up to my guy friend how I took that silly class only because Kristal asked me to since she liked him, and we had a good laugh about silly memories. Through the tough conversation though, he explained to me how he valued our friendship and wanted us to always be there for each other. He told me, "Savanna I want for you to be able to call me right after you meet your soul mate to tell me about him, I want our friendship to be that close. I want to be able to call you once I meet my soul mate and tell you everything about her. When it's my wedding, I want a say so that you are one of my bridesmaids, I need you to be there. I want us to always be there for each other." After hearing that, I thought wow he has already thought about all that. Given we're just juniors in college and still so young. Needless to say it was getting late into the night and one of our other friends walked outside the patio and asked, "Oh I thought you guys had already left?" He left and we both forgave each other for our mistakes and hugged each other tightly before we decided to leave the party, which we discovered that everyone had already left once we were done talking. That's how long of a night it seemed to be.
